DSL + DVD

Purchasing a DVD with educational rights (educational classroom/academic library rights) means that you may use the title film on the DVD only in-person classroom screenings and viewings. Explicitly excluded is the right for a college, university or other educational institution to internally encode the title film on the DVD, in order to stream it locally for classes and students within the institution.

The right to encode and stream the film may be obtained by purchasing a Digital Site License (DSL) for the lifetime of the file (i.e., in perpetuity). DSL rights allow colleges, universities or educational institutions to locally host and stream the title film on the DVD within a closed, password-protected system that is restricted to use by those enrolled in classes or staff, faculty or guests of the campus community on a single campus.

The DEFA Film Library offers DSL rights for most of the titles released on DVD.

DSL + Film File

The DEFA Film Library also offers DSL rights for additional titles that were not released on DVD. For these titles we will make a film file available and additional costs for the film file will apply in addition to the license fee for the DSL rights (see below). 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

We will grant DSL rights to educational institutions who are able to meet and agree to our Terms and Conditions. 

PRICING

The DSL rights and license fee applies to the main (title) film on the DVD—not the bonus film(s)—only! If a DVD contains a playlist, several full-length titles, or you are interested in DSL rights of bonus films, please contact us.

To purchase DSL rights for specific films released on DVD, just visit the title of your choice in our e-store. In the drop-down menu select “Digital Site License” and you will find the correct DSL license fee.

If you are interested in titles that were not released on DVD but are available for DSL rights and for which we will make files available, please get in touch with us. 

The license fee of DSL rights depends on the length of the film(s):

60 minutes or more $495

31 to 59 minutes long $395

30 minutes or less $225

10 minutes or less $75

Retroactive Purchase

DSL rights may also be purchased retroactively for DVDs an institution purchased in the past. To do so, go to our e-store.

STREAMING ON THER EDUCATIONAL PLATFORMS 

Our titles are available to stream on educational streaming platforms, including Kanopy, Andrew Matthew Digital, and DEFA Vimeo.
